Arizona State University’s Borderlands Cinematic Arts presents a public debut screening of Let the City Speak: The Sonic Journey of Quetzal, a documentary film tracing music, memory, and activism through the perspective of Quetzal, a Chicano rock band rooted in 1990s East Los Angeles music and art. A panel discussion following the screening features Quetzal band member Quetzal Flores, band member and MacArthur Fellow Martha Gonzalez (2022), as well as filmmakers and MacArthur Fellows Cristina Ibarra (2021) and Alex Rivera (2021), to reflect on the film’s themes of art, cultural memory, and creative collaboration. The program concludes with a fandango in Noguchi Plaza, a participatory music and dance tradition from Veracruz, Mexico, led by members of Quetzal.
