Launched in 1991 as a downtown summer arts program for Chicago teens, and expanded to Chicago Public Schools in 1995, After School Matters (ASM) empowers high school students to explore their interest in the arts and develop skills for success in college, career, and life. Professional artists deliver ASM’s arts programming, which comprises 40 percent of the organization’s overall offerings; creativity is infused into other learning opportunities, as well. Students take classes in music, painting, photography, dance, and more. They present their work to the community through showcase events, benefit from apprenticeships, and create public art. This award provides general operating support to ASM as part of the Foundation’s Culture, Equity, and the Arts program.
