Established in 1890, the Chicago Botanic Garden’s mission is to cultivate the power of plants to sustain and enrich life. The Chicago Botanic Garden (the Garden) is a 385-acre public garden, which also conducts research, education, and conservation programs. Its main campus in Glencoe, Illinois, includes a living collection with more than 2.6 million plants in 27 exhibition gardens, including Japanese, rose, and English, among others. It engages more than one million annual visitors. Popular visitors’ programs include the Orchid Show and the winter Lightscape installation. The Garden also operates urban farms as part of its Windy City Harvest program. Its fifteen work sites and farms are located throughout the city of Chicago and in Lake County. The Garden is one of only 33 public gardens accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. This award provides general operating support to the Garden as part of the Foundation’s Culture, Equity, and the Arts program.

Its main campus in Glencoe, Illinois, includes a living collection with more than 2.6 million plants in 26 exhibition gardens (e.g., Japanese, rose, and English) and in four natural areas (woodlands, wetlands, lakes, and prairie). It is one of only 17 public gardens accredited by the American Association of Museums. The Garden’s education programs take place both on-site (such as school trips, science camps, teacher training programs, adult classes, workshops, and symposia) and in communities (such as urban gardens for youth, young adults, and non-violent offenders). The Garden’s conservation and research departments train scientists through its Master’s and Ph.D. programs that it operates in conjunction with Northwestern University. The Garden’s research projects span nearly 40 states and 30 countries. Its scholarly research focuses on plants and their response to climate change and other human impacts. The Garden is free to the public and open 365 days a year, serving one million people each year. This award provides renewed general operating support to the Chicago Botanic Garden.
