Established in 1987, Chicago Sinfonietta’s mission is to champion diversity, equity, and inclusion by creating community through bold symphonic experiences. With this award, the Chicago Sinfonietta convenes small and medium size arts and culture organizations representing the 77 community areas of Chicago. These conversations will build knowledge around policies, campaigns, and initiatives that aim to help increase performing arts audiences and promote community attendance lost since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A MacArthur Award recognizes organizations that have excellent programs, that are well-managed, and that are at an inflection point, where they are likely to grow either in size or influence. The Sinfonietta will allocate most of the awarded funds to an operating reserve; it will allocate a smaller portion to underwriting critical infrastructure upgrades.
